BASEBALL: WALK IT OFF

BASEBALL: WALK IT OFF

Despite 6 errors, the Hornets pulled off a 6-5 win over Grossmont College in 12 innings at home Tuesday.

Both teams came to the game undefeated, but by the day's end the Griffins would take their first loss on the young season (2-1).  With today's win, the Hornets improved their record to 3-0.

FC got off to a rough start as Grossmont's lead off batter Brandon Lewis hit one over the ivy in left field.  Fullerton catcher Oliver Jackson tied it up in the bottom of the first on a single to left field allowing 2B Nick Gotta to score the run.

In the top of the fifth, mistakes hurt the Hornets as they fell behind 4-1. FC managed a run in the bottom of the inning cutting the score at 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hornet's CF Dakota Wix got the ball rolling on a single up the middle.  He then stole second.  Gotta came up to bat and ripped a triple to right field scoring Wix.  DH KC Huth doubled to left field scoring Gotta.  Huth proceeded to steal third and SS Jose Rojas brought him home on a SAC Fly to right field giving Fullerton a 5-4 lead.

More FC mistakes allowed the Griffins to creep in for the 5-5 tie.  From there, the score would remain the same until the bottom of the twelfth.  Leading off, LF John Orlando lined one into to center for a single and then stole second. Wix flied out to right field.  With one out, Grossmont intentionally walked Huth and then Gotta.  Clean-up hitter Rojas stepped up to the plate and delivered a shot to left field allowing Orlando to cross the plate for the 6-5 game winner.

RP Austin Sweet (1-0) grabbed the win going 2 innings with a strikeout and a walk.

Up Next: The Hornets (3-0) will hit travel to Southwestern College this Thursday, February 6th. Game time is at 2:00 pm.
