HORNETS TAKE THE KEY

Fullerton remained unbeaten (10-0 on the season) by holding off Santa Ana College 56-35 in the 91st Key to the County game.

Fullerton drew first blood scoring the first touchdown of the game on a 37-yard passing TD from QB Jose Escobar to WR Eli Pleasant (4:22 1Q). FC quickly struck again on a fumble return by DB Alex Bernstein who took it to the house from 60 yards out. Santa Ana never laid down scoring a couple of TDs of their own in the first half, but the Hornets took control of the game maintaining a healthy lead throughout to preserve their perfect season.

The game featured a few broken records, including the record for the highest amount of points in the series with 91 combined points. The previous record was held by three games at 80 points (2003, 2006, 2007).

Hornet QB Jose Escobar was stellar going 18-23 with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions for 295 yards. RB Ryan Byrd ran the ball 10 times for 59 yards and a score while RB Lavorrie Johnson 8 times for 19 yards and a TD. WR Ryan Longoria had 4 catches for 82 yards and a TD.

Defensive standouts included Austin Steele (8 tackles), Jordan Kessen (7 tackles), Siasi Sina (5 tackles), Treshon Broughton (1 int, TD, 2 tackles), Antoine Turner (4 tackles), Chris Lewis (4 tackles), and Tyler Floyd (4 tackles and 2 breakups).

The stadium was buzzing with excitment as it was a homecoming game that celebrated the 100th annivesary of Fullerton College.  The stands were full of Hornet supporters from all over, includng FC President Dr. Rajen Vurdien, NOCCCD Chancellor Dr. Ned Doffoney, four NOCCCD Board of Trustees, and former Hornet football players spanning five decades.

Former Hornet Athletic Trainer Bill Chambers was honored at halftime for his 38 years of dedicated service to Fullerton College and the Athletic Training profession. Hornets and colleagues from all decades and sports came to see Bill receive a bronze plaque with his likeness dedicating the Athletic Training room in his name.

Up Next: The #1 Hornets (10-0 overall, 6-0 conference) will play #5 College of the Canyons on November 23rd at Yorba Linda High's Shapell Stadium.  Kickoff is at 1:00 pm.
