FOOTBALL: HORNETS FEND OFF FALCONS
Fullerton hosted Cerritos College on Saturday and managed to keep the Falcons at bay 24-21.
FC put up the game's first points with 2:56 left in the first quarter on a 2-yard run by RB Eugene Baker
Before the first quarter could end, Cerritos caught Fullerton sleeping on a 70-yard deep route by WR Domonique Young from QB Jimmy Walker to tie the game up 7-7.
Hornet kicker Casey Eyman had quite a day running for a first down on 4th and 7 (18 yard run), completing a 6-yard pass to TE Tim Holt for a first down (4 and 5), and hit a 20-yard field goal putting FC up 10-7 with 11:11 left in the first half.
The Falcons took 14-10 lead by the end of the first half when QB Jimmy Walker hit WR Travis Newberry for a 16-yard score with 13 seconds left.
Fullerton opened up the second half taking the ball down the field to pay-dirt when QB Joey Verhaegh hit WR Ryan Markush for a 37-yard TD (10:43 3Q / 9 plays 65 yards).
After a Cerritos quick three and out series, the Hornets took the ball down the field again (10 plays 50 yards) Verhaegh ending it on a 1-yard QB plunge into the end zone putting FC up 24-14 with 2:17 left in the third quarter.
But once again Fullerton fell victim to the long pass as the Falcon's Domonique Young burned the FC defense on a 48-yard TD pass from Walker with 2:17 left in the third quarter.
Up 24-21, the Hornets defense remained mistake-free in the fourth quarter shutting out the Falcon offense to win the game.
Up Next: FC (2-1) will travel to Orange Coast College for a Southern Conference match-up this Saturday, September 27th at LeBard Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
