FOOTBALL: SCFA CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

The Southern California Football Association Championship promises to be a game for the ages. #1 Fullerton College and #2 Riverside City College will meet for the first time this season at Yorba Linda High School's Nathan Shapell Stadium to find out who truly is the SCFA champion this Saturday, November 26th.

Not only are bragging rights at stake for this game, but the champion moves on representing SoCal at the CCCAA State Championship on December 10th to host champ from the Northern California Football Association.

The RCC Tigers (10-1 overall) come into this game with only one loss on the season. They were the unquestioned number one team in the CCCAA rankings for seven straight weeks, until they faltered against Long Beach City College in a 38-31 road-loss back on November 5th. Riverside won the Central Conference title for the third time in the last four seasons.

The Tigers and Hornets have a long history that dates back to their first meeting in 1921. Fullerton did win that game 28-6, however Riverside owns the overall series lead at 36-27. The last time these two teams played was in week six of last season at Yorba Linda High where the Hornets knocked off the Tigers 52-21.

The RCC offense is a dangerous one that can beat opposing defenses in the air and on the ground averaging 43.4 points a game. The air attack is averaging 278.6 yards a game, and their ground game averages 209.5 yards a game. Defensively, the Tigers are stingy against the rush holding their opponents to 89.4 yards a game. In the passing game, they allow 202.5 yards. They give up 19.3 points a game. In all, Riverside is the complete package on both sides of the ball.

Leading the way for Riverside is sophomore quarterback Collyn Anderson who has thrown for 2,054 yards (142 comps. 232 atts.), 26 TDs, and only 3 interceptions. Catching many of Anderson's TD passes, with 10, is Darius Hunter. A sophomore, Hunter has 36 catches and 731 yards in 10 games this season. The team receptions leaders are sophomores Jacoby Herring Malik Yoakum who each have 48 catches in 11 games played. Herring has 663 yards with 5 TDs and Yoakum has 518 yards with 4 TDs. The running game is one to watch as it features two backs who have totaled 1,975 yards in Seth Acda (1,019 yds.) and Eltoro Allen (956 yds.).

The Hornet offense has been the best in the state this season with a scoring average of 52.3 points a game. The passing average is 314.4 and the rushing average is 213 a game.

Last week's National Bowl MVP Jordan Hoy continues to bring it throwing a record-breaking 35 touchdowns (adding to his single season school record) with 6 interceptions. Hoy has thrown for 3,075 yards and leads the team on the ground with 677 yards, on 116 carries, and 9 touchdowns. The FC running backs are ready for the Tiger defense with Kentavious Thomas (86 carries, 463 yards, 2 TDs), Phillip Butler (66 carries, 419 yards, 6 TDs), Gerald Hulett (65 carries, 313 yards, 5 TDs), Anthony Wood (49 carries, 300 yards, 4 TDs), and Aundre Carter (29 carries, 136, 5 TDs) heading up a potent running attack. The Fullerton receiving corps of Markus Grossman (36 catches, 502 yards, 5 TDs), DeAndre McNeal (30 catches, 562 yards, 6 TDs), Asante Wilder (26 catches, 436 yards, 5 TDs), Jerome Gross (22 catches, 238 yards, 1 TD), and Justin Walker (19 catches, 358 yards, 7 TDs) will give the RCC secondary a serious challenge.

The Hornet defense allows, on average, 23 points a game. They allow 236.6 in the air and have been stingy on the ground with 88.1 yards against their opponents. Defensive linemen Montre Bonner (9.5 sacks), Tyler Stepney (8.5 sacks), Justin Parcells (7.5 sacks), Quentin Yontz (4 sacks), and the rest of the Hornet D will need put pressure on QB Collyn Anderson and bottle up the Tiger running game in order for the Hornets to win this one.

The last time Fullerton played in the SCFA championship was in 2013 when they beat Riverside City College 23-14 advancing to their first state championship game since 1983. The Hornets wound up losing the state championship up at Butte College 28-13. Butte is currently the #1 seed in the north playing #2 American River in the NCFA title game.

The SCFA Championship game between Riverside and Fullerton will take place at Yorba Linda High's Nathan Shapell Stadium this Saturday, November 26th. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm.
