FOOTBALL: #1 FC MAKES A STATEMENT OVER #5 MT. SAC

Two nationally ranked teams, #1 Fullerton College and #5 Mt. San Antonio College, played at Nathan Shapell Stadium on Saturday afternoon with the Hornets coming out on top 49-23.

Fullerton came out on fire in the first quarter scoring two touchdowns just fifty seconds apart. After both teams' offenses sputtered in their opening drives, the Hornets came out in their next possession to score in four plays. Starting from their own 18-yardline, quarterback Kane Wilson connected with Markus Grossman for 45 yards. On the next play, Wilson took off running up the middle of field for 38-yards dragging a couple of Mountie players for a touchdown (10:25 1Q).

On the ensuing kickoff, Antonio Estrada pooched the ball to the Mt. SAC 37-yardline where it bounced off the hands of a Mountie and into the hands of Markus Andre Kirkpatrick. From there, quarterback Ladarius Skelton led the FC offense to paydirt in five plays taking it himself for a 1-yard run (9:15 1Q).

Mt. SAC came back with a score of their own with four minutes left in the first quarter on a drive that took four plays. Emetrious Scott caught a 40-yard pass from Jaiave Magalei.

The game seemed to be back on track for the Mounties, but Fullerton roared back scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter signaling their claim to the game. Wilson came in hitting Malik Abdul-Haqq on an 8-yard TD, Skelton ran in a TD from the 8-yardline, and Devin Hessler picked up a Mountie fumble and took it in from the 1-yardline. Fullerton owned a 42-7 lead at the end of the first half.

There were no scores in the third quarter. The Mounties did manage two TDs and a safety in junk time during the fourth, but FC had the game in a stranglehold and was not letting go.

The two-headed quarterback-monster of Wilson and Skelton proved to be the difference as Wilson threw for 189 yards (11 for 17) with 2 TDs and Skelton passed for 94 yards (6 for 12). Wilson also rushed for 48 yards (6 carries) with a TD, and Skelton ran for a team-high 144 yards (16 carries) with 2 TDs.

On defense, Jacob Jones had a strong game with 14 tackles (5 solo / 9 asst.) and an interception. Kameron Powell and Cody Darrow helped out with 5 tackles each.

Up Next: The #1 Hornets (4-0 overall) will play at Moorpark College on Saturday, September 30th. Kickoff is at 6:00 pm.
