FOOTBALL: HAMMERING HORNETS

The No. 13 Hornet football team brought down the hammer at home on Thursday night defeating San Bernardino Valley College 49-6.

FC opened conference-play with a bang moving to 1-0 (4-2 overall) in the SCFA National Southern, while the Wolverines are pushed to 0-1 with an overall record of 1-4.

The Hornets scored the game's first touchdown after San Bernardino fumbled in its first drive. Three plays later Fullerton running back Branden Rankins pounded the turf 12 yards to paydirt.

After a Hornet turnover, the Wolverines found themselves in the redzone where Julian Pan eventually knocked in a 22-yard field goal.

The FC offense took over in the second quarter outscoring SBVC 28-3. Running back Tyrell Greene scored twice from 2 and 7 yards out. QB Chandler Galban punched one in from the 2-yardline, and Galban connected Braedin Huffman for a 16-yard strike. With a second left in the first half, Pan hit a 32-yard field goal for the Wolverines. As both teams headed for the locker room, Fullerton held a strong 35-6 advantage.

The Hornets managed 14 more security points in the second half while holding San Bernardino scoreless. Both FC touchdowns were in the third quarter. Rankins struck again for his second score from 2 yards out, and QB Tra Edwards hit Charles Byers, who took it to the house for 48 yards.

Defensively, for Fullerton Isaac Hurtado had a big night with 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and a blocked pass. Jonoven Smith had 6 tackles (4 solo). Jordan Wright had a nice pick running back 69 yards, while Anthony Wilson snagged an interception for 11 yards.

Historically, Fullerton owns a 22-14 all-time series lead. The first time the Hornets and Wolverines met was back in 1962 with Fullerton winning that game 20-6 in Coach Hal Sherbeck's second season as head coach.

Up Next: Fullerton (4-2 overall) will head south down the 5 Freeway to Southwestern College for another Southern Conference showdown on Saturday, October 23rd. Kickoff is at 6:00 pm.
