Former Cal State Fullerton standout Tim Byrnes enters his 26th season as a Hornet coach and his 11th as the head coach.

In 2008, Byrnes coached the Hornets to a 10-2, 6-0 record, a SCFA conference championship, a National Bowl title, and to the Southern California Semi-Finals.

Byrnes' sophomore campaign in 2009 was just as successful as the Fullerton took their second conference title in as many years. Once again, Byrnes led FC a bowl game title (National Bowl) , and to the State Semi-Finals. The Hornets posted a 10-2 overall record and a 6-0 conference record.

In 2010 Bynes led the Hornets to a third consecutive bowl game victory beating College of the Canyons 64-49 in the Golden Empire Bowl in Bakersfield. FC ended the season 7-4 overall and was ranked as one of the top teams in the nation.

In 2012, Byrnes helped lead the Hornets to another conference championship (7-4 overall record) and a Western State Bowl game victory (34-21 over Citrus College).

In 2013 he guided Fullerton College to an undefeated regular season winning their 23rd conference title. The Hornets won their 17th bowl game (56-17 victory against College of the Cayons), beat Riverside City College 23-14 winning the Southern California Championship, and also played for the State Title where they fell at Butte College 28-13 for their only loss on the season (12-1 overall).

In 2014, Byrnes led FC to another conference championship (his fifth in seven seasons) going undefeated for the second year in a row. The team finished 8-3 ovrerall making it to the Southern California Bowl.

The 2016 season marked the 100-year of the Hornet football program and saw the Hornets win their fourth State and National Title going 12-1 overall. Coach Byrnes was named Coach of the Year by the SCFA, the CCCAA, and was selected to the All-America Team.

In 2017, the Hornets completed their back-to-back State and National Title run going an undefeated 13-0. Coach Byrnes was once again named Coach of the Year by the SCFA, the CCCAA, and was selected to the All-America Team.

Since 1916, Byrnes is the seventeenth head coach in Fullerton College's long and storied football history.

Byrnes began assistant coaching at FC in 1993 working with the running backs and special teams under Coach Gene Murphy. In 1996 he became the offensive coordinator. In the time that Byrnes began coaching at Fullerton, the Hornets have moved well over 600 players on to the next level — among the most in all of community college football.

A standout athlete at Sunny Hills High School, Byrnes earned All-League, All-County, and All-CIF honors as a running back in 1984. He then was recruited to play at Cal State Fullerton by Coach Murphy and played with the Titans for four seasons, earning All-Big West honors his senior year.

After he received his bachelor's in business from Cal State Fullerton, Byrnes coached the running backs at Brea High School for two seasons.

Murphy took over at Fullerton College in 1993 and hired Byrnes as one of his first Hornet assistants.

Byrnes earned tenure as a full-time faculty member for the Physical Education Division in 2002, and received his master's degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University in 1992.

He and his wife Heidi are enjoying their three children Sydney, Sean, and Scarlett — they reside in Orange.
