MEN'S BASKETBALL: UGLY WINS NEED LOVE TOO

MEN'S BASKETBALL: UGLY WINS NEED LOVE TOO

The Hornets took care of business in game one of the 34th annual Fullerton College Classic Tournament Wednesday night getting past #12 Chaffey College 52-48.

Chaffey struck first going up 4-0 to start the game, and they maintained that lead until the 3:30 mark when Hornet guard Jason Richardson dropped a spin move on the base line and dunked over his defender. Fullerton went up for the first time 20-19. A few plays later, Akil Reese added a three-pointer and FC went into their locker-room with a 25-20 halftime lead.

Fullerton kept their lead into the second half, until the Panthers made a run to tie it up at 30 a piece on a layup by Andy (Andres) Torices at 16:01. The two teams battled trading 1-point leads.

Richardson made the difference for FC, with 1:49 left in the game, slashing and hitting a seven-foot jumper over an outstretched defender that gave them a 47-45 lead. Richardson added another jumper with 41 seconds left to go up 49-45, and the Hornets held on for the win.

It was not the prettiest win for Fullerton as the team only shot 40.4% from the floor, free throws 44.8%, and they turned the ball over 13 times. The good news for FC is that Chaffey shot 34.6% from the floor, 60% free throws, and had 17 turnovers. Both teams struggled beyond the three-point arc (Fullerton 8.3% and Chaffey 21.4%).

Jason Richardson and Khalil Stevenson had team-highs of 10 points each. Stevenson added 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Akil Reese totaled 7 points with 5 rebounds. For Chaffey, Andy (Andres) Torices and Mam Ayuel shared a game-high 11-point game.

Up Next: The Hornets (3-1 overall) will play #11 Mt San Jacinto College (2-2) this Friday, November 10th at 7:00 pm in the semi-final game. The Eagles beat College of the Canyons 69-65, which advances them to Friday's game.
