22ND ANNUAL ACADEMIC ATHLETIC AWARDS

22ND ANNUAL ACADEMIC ATHLETIC AWARDS

The North Gym was filled with student-athletes, parents, faculty, and administration on Wednesday afternoon for the 22nd Academic Athletic Awards honoring excellence in academics and athletic achievement.

It was a very successful year for the Fullerton College Athletic Department that saw the men's basketball team win conference and the 2019 state title. The women's water polo team won a conference title and was the 2018 state runner-up. The men's soccer team had their most successful season in the program's history winning 17 games en route to a conference title. Individually, Eunsoo Jeon won the state title in women's golf. For all the success, the Fullerton College Physical Education/Athletic Department honored those deserving student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom and on the playing field. Scholarship awards were handed out to deserving sophomore athletes in order for them to further their education and succeed at the next level.

Special Recognition awards were given to longtime game timer John Acevedo and Head Baseball Coach Nick Fuscardo. Acevedo has been working football and basketball games for the Hornets in since 1983. He truly is a Hornet. Coach Fuscardo just wrapped up his 33rd and final season as the skipper for the Hornets with 665 wins, the most in program's history.

Many of the Fullerton College student-athletes were recognized as Hornet Scholars maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher completing at least 24 units. All of this would not have been possible if not for the tireless efforts of the FC faculty and staff.

The Academic Athletic Awards was the brainchild of beloved former Head Football Coach Gene Murphy,.who poured his heart and soul into furthering the education of Fullerton College student-athletes. Athletic Director Scott Giles has done an excellent job in keeping the torch lit for Coach Murphy's tradition by creating an atmosphere on campus where students-athletes are rewarded for their efforts, and given the proper tools to help further their success not only on the playing field but also in life.
