With over 16 years of water polo coaching experience, Gary Cheever is a proven leader in the development of high school and college athletes. Known for his strategic planning, team development, and strong recruitment practices, Cheever has transformed programs across Southern California, increasing participation and competitive success at every level.
Currently the head coach of the boy’s team at Midvalley Water Polo Club, Cheever has helped boost enrollment from 12 to 45 athletes within a year and built a robust program of 40-plus youth participants. He has also very familiar with Fullerton College having served as the men and women’s assistant water polo coach for the past five years. He was also the head coach of the boy and girl’s teams at Troy High, where his leadership has driven strong postseason performances and improved program strength and diversity.
From 2015-2019 Cheever was an assistant coach CHAWP Water Polo club in Norco helping to develop young athletes. In 2019, he served as an assistant coach with CHAWP’s International training camp in Hungary where he evaluated athletes for the Junior Olympics for ages 14 to 18.
From 2016 to 2023, Cheever helmed the girls water polo and swim programs at Claremont High School, earning multiple CIF playoff berths and leading the team to five league championships. His commitment to excellence was also evident at Diamond Bar High School, where he grew the program to 50-plus athletes and led deep CIF runs while managing a $27,000 budget. Prior stints include head coaching roles at Don Lugo and Chino Hills High Schools, where he consistently enhanced team records and player development.
In addition to his coaching work, Cheever served as Director of Raptor Sports School from 2019 to 2023, organizing competitive events and training regimens that emphasized skill-building and team cohesion.

- Consistent success in Palomares and Mt. Baldy Leagues
