SOFTBALL: EXTRA INNING HEARTBREAK

SOFTBALL: EXTRA INNING HEARTBREAK

The No. 4 south FC softball team came close but lost the opening game of CCCAA State Tournament in a nine-inning battle to No. 1 north College of San Mateo 5-4.

The Hornets (37-8 overall) went toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs (42-2) in extra innings, but a solo home run by Alley Sarabia in the bottom of the ninth ended the game in walk-off fashion. Fullerton will now face a very familiar team in district rival Cypress College (38-8), who lost earlier in the day to No. 3 north San Joaquin Delta (37-6) 5-2.

San Mateo took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer Riley Donovan that cleared the left field fence.

Fullerton tied the game up at two a piece in the top of the third when Desiree Guzman dashed home on a wild pitch. Veronica Garza then came up lining a single to left field that brought Jocelyn Alcala in.

The Hornets took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth when Khloe Lilavois reached down on a low pitch smacking the ball deep to center field for her third home run of the season.

CSM's Donovan evened the score in the bottom fourth hitting her second home run of the game, a solo shot to left field.

FC went up again in the sixth scoring a run on Guzman's blooper to left that plated Sarah Rengifo, but another homer by the Bulldog's Amanda Ubois-Weitenhagen tied the game up once again at 4-4.

Fighting it out until the ninth inning, San Mateo gave the final blow hitting their fourth homer on the day.

Lulu Vasquez got the start for Fullerton in the circle throwing 4 innings giving up 3 hits. Jessica Lopez came in to throw another 4.1 innings giving up 4 hits. Both Hornet pitchers entered the game giving up only 4 home runs each for the entire season. The Bulldogs showed why they lead the state in homers crushing 4 in todays' game alone.
