WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: HORNETS DROP THE OEC OPENER

The Hornets opened up conference-play at home with Wednesday night falling to Riverside City College 63-52.

The loss gives Fullerton an overall record of 8-7 with an Orange Empire Conference record of 0-1. The Tiger win lands them at 5-8 overall with an OEC record of 1-0.

FC was stunned early giving Riverside a 13-4 lead in the first 5 minutes. Fullerton slowly began to chip away getting with in 6 points by the end of the first quarter (16-10).

Fullerton started to get back in the groove in second quarter taking their first lead of the game at 6:12 (19-18) on a jumper by Lyneya Turner. Both teams fought it out for the rest of the half, but the enjoyed a narrow 28-26 edge by the time both teams exited for the lockers.

Riverside maintained their narrow lead during the third quarter, but Fullerton would not go away. Down 6 points at the 3:40 mark, Moriah Serrano hit a three-point shot pulling FC back into the game 41-38. The Tigers then went on a 7-4 run to end the quarter owning a 48-42 lead.

The Hornets battled with the Tigers into the fourth quarter, but RCC widened their lead by 13 with 2:31 left in the game.

It was a rough night shooting from the floor for the Hornets (24.3%). Riverside owned the key out-shooting FC 38-24 in the paint.

The Hornet's Moriah Serrano scored a team-high 18 points and 6 rebounds. Tristian Johns had 11 points with 6 rebounds and Hannah Jones had 9 points with 11 rebounds. Shenise West also brought down 11 boards. Jaelyn Alderete scored 8 points.

Up Next: Fullerton (8-7 overall, 0-1 OEC) will hit the road this Friday, January 11th at Irvine Valley College (11-3, 1-0). Game time is at 7:00 pm.
