WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: FC STUNS CHARGERS IN A BIG WAY

The Hornets had a tough challenge Wednesday night against No. 14 in SoCal Cypress College, but they trounced the Chargers in front of the home crowd with a 67-49 win.

Fullerton's big win gives them an overall record of 11-8 with an Orange Empire Conference record of 3-2. The Charger defeat lands them at 12-7 overall and gives them their first loss in the OEC at 4-1.

The first quarter began with a bang for the Hornets as they opened up with a 12-2 run. Cypress was not about to fold. They went on their own run of 11-2 getting within 1 point (14-13) by the end of the quarter. 

The Hornets shot 46% from the floor to Cypress' 26.7% in the second quarter, which enabled them to take a 32-25 lead by halftime.

The Chargers pressed the Hornets getting within 6 points with 3 minutes left in the third (40-36). Fullerton had too much going their way as they took off on another run (13-1) to end the quarter at 53-35.

With the game well at hand, Fullerton did not take its foot off the pedal as they went on to take their largest lead of the game of 22 (59-37) with 7 minutes left in regulation.

As a team, the Hornets played very well shooting 77.3 % (17-22) from the line, scoring 19 points off of turnovers, and shooting 37.7% to the Chargers' 27.4%. The FC defense also held the Cypress starters to a total of 12 points for the game.

Leading all scorers was FC's Tristian Johns with 20. She also added 7 rebounds. Fia Tailele-Latu dropped in 14 points and Moriah Serrano scored 13 with 7 rebounds. Shenise West just missed a double-double with 9 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Hannah Jones chipped in with 7 points and 5 rebounds.

Up Next: The Hornets (11-8 overall, 3-2 OEC) hit the road this Friday, January 25th when they play at Copper Mountain for another OEC game. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm.
