WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: GETTING STARTED IN BAKERSFIELD

The Lady Hornets opened up their season with traveling to Bakersfield College for the Battle of the Regions meet with 12 community college schools in attendance. 

The weather was a perfect sunny day and the team was able to put their talent to the track after the long pre-season conditioning efforts.  

Freshman Philliz Tu'avao won the discus with an effort of 117' 2" and sophomore Yessenia Gutierrez opened up her season with a personal best throw of 99' 2". Both of these ladies continued on with their day competing in the hammer and shot put.  Philliz competed in the hammer for the first time and threw a competitive 99'9" effort.  Yessenia gave herself a personal record (PR) with a 96'8" throw.  Carrying their good fortunes in to the shot put were throws of 32'5" for Tu'avao and Gutierrez 30'4.25".

"A good start for the season and room to grow with bigger throws", said Head Coach Gina Bevec.

Freshman Myrna Gillas placed third overall in the high jump with an easy 4'10.25" mark. Josephine Riese (FR) had a busy day with jumping 13' 4.25" in the long jump and running 15.74 in the 100 meters.  Sophomore, Shyleen Ramos started her day off in the long jump (12'5.25") and went to the track to run the 400 meters in 1:11.33 followed by the 200M in 31.13.  Another sophomore who you will see good marks from will be Jordyn Reese. She ran a conditioning 400 meter race in 1:08.37 and finished her day with a quick 13.56 dash in the 100 meters. Jade Crutchfield (FR) will be another Hornet to watch this season as she ran 1:08.12 in the 400 meters and followed with a quick run of 14.24 in the 100 meters. 

On the longer side of the races, sophomore Belen Banda (Gonzalez) had a busy day with the start of running the 1500 meters passing the line in 5:39.53 followed by Maricruz Vargas (FR) who ran 5:41.75. Belen continued on to the 800 meters running the two laps in 2:41.84 and followed by a training 200 meters dash.

The ladies show that the off season training was prosperous. There are still athletes that weren't ready for this meet but will be ready for the next meet to make their Hornet debut. Watch the Lady Hornets unfold their athletic prowess throughout the season. 

Up Next:The Hornets will go again on Friday, February 23rd for an OEC event at Golden West College.
