WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: CONFERENCE SWEEP

The Lady Hornets opened up their Orange Empire Conference season with a double win against Golden West and Orange Coast!

The host school was Golden West College and on a windy and chilly day the ladies came out to compete! The scores were FC 70 points - OCC 66 points and FC 75 points - GWC 55 points.

The ladies conquered first place in the high jump, long jump, and swept the shot put, discus and hammer events. This was our second meet of the season and the ladies are showing that the training is paying off and working on those little things that will make the difference at the end of the season.

Sophomore Marianne Gourd had a good first meet of the season with PR's (personal records) in the hammer 122' 8" and discus 107' 9". Her shot put was a respectable throw of 35' 3" for the win in that event. Another sophomore Yessenia Gutierrez had a good day with giving her PR's with the shot put and a 31' 0" effort and 99' 11" toss in the discus. Her first javelin event of the season landed her a 72' 11" throw.  Freshman, Philliz Tu'avao had a good day herself and pushed her marks further with a PR in the hammer 103' 3".  She won the discus in 109' 1" mark and helped with scoring in the javelin and shot put. Kim Mataia, freshman, first time thrower put out some respectable marks in the hammer 88'1", shot put 30' 9", and discus 97' 7".  She will be someone to watch as the season unfolds. Kim Torres (aka KT) had her first meet of the season alongside Mataia and competed in the discus and shot put.

"The ladies did a great job and put up some respectable marks in the throws, great camaraderie with them", said Head Coach Gina Bevec.

Myrna Gillas continues to show her athleticism and is leading the OEC in the long jump with her first time jump of the season of 16' 6.5". She conquered the high jump again and ran a 29.37 in the 200 meters. Josephine Riese placed second in the 100 meters and third in the long jump events.  Every point is needed, as the ladies were very successful today. The support from each other is very tenacious and the team gets along pushing each other to be at their best always.

The 400-meter relay consisting of Jade Crutchfield, Jordyn Reese, Shyleen Ramos, and Myrna Gillas opened up the running events on the track taking second place to GWC relay team. Almost had the win as it was very close running past the finish line and needed cleaner handoffs. Jordyn Reese gave a good performance in the 200 meters with a 28.32 dash second place effort. Belen Banda (Gonzalez) had a good day on the track placing second place in the 800 meters 2:40.90 and the 1500 meters 5:3.28. Teammate Maricruz Vargas was just behind Belen placing third in the 800 meters and ran 5:43.14 in the 1500 meters. Jade Crutchfield stole second place in the 400 meters running a 1:09.85 and Shyleen Ramos right behind her for third. The season is unfolding and the ladies are in a good spot and pushing their marks every week.
