WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: STRONG AT THE OEC INVITE

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: STRONG AT THE OEC INVITE

The Lady Hornets finished in third place at the Orange Coast Classic last Friday. Rain was supposed to be on the horizon however blue skies showed up and the ladies turned out some awesome performances.

Palomar had 112 points for first, Orange Coast 91.5 points and Fullerton third with 87 points out of 10 teams.

The throwers cleaned up in the field events and won the hammer, shot put and discus events. Marianne Gourd was the champion in the hammer and shot put events. Her hammer was ready to go and she gave herself a 20 foot PR of 140' 3" which now has her ranked seventh in SoCal.

"Everything felt right today and my hammer turns were spot on" replied Gourd.

Philliz Tu'avao came in fifth followed by Yessenia Gutierrez for sixth (97' 10" PR) and Kim Mataia claimed the eighth spot. Teammate Philliz Tu'avao was the discus champion and threw just a few feet under her best of the season. Marianne Gourd came in second followed by Yessenia Gutierrez for fourth and Kim Mataia was fifth overall.  The strength of this group continued in the shot put with Marianne taking first place and Philliz Tu'avao was fourth with a PR of 32' 7.5" followed by Kim Mataia for the fifth place.

On the track, the times were dropping and very good on a day like this as the afternoon turned cold and windy in Costa Mesa. They could have claimed second place overall in this meet, however we were DQ in the 400 meter relay as there was a baton passed out of the zone.

"We will get that cleaned up this week" said Jade Crutchfield.

Jordyn Reese ran her best in the 200 meters 27.88 for fourth place and Jade Crutchfield followed her sprinting in 28.80 for seventh place.  Jordyn came in fifth place overall for the 100 meter dash.  Belen Banda Gonzalez ran her best in the 1500M with a time of 5:32.89 and Maricruz Vargas was the fourth best 3000M runner and had her best time of 12:06.46.  She is getting ready to run another 5K and feels like this training is getting her ready.

Up Next: The OEC Double Dual Meet at Fullerton College against Santa Ana and Golden West College.  The field events start at 11:30 am and track events start at 2:30 pm.
