WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD: SOLID START TO THE 2019 SEASON
The Lady Hornets opened their 2019 season competing in the Battle of the Regions at Bakersfield College last Friday.
The day on the track started off with freshman, Raquel Aldama winning the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:51.87.
"I had fun running this event and I know what to expect for the next time and how I can improve my time", said Aldama.
Sophomore Myrna Gillas had a good day winning the high jump at 5'1". The leap has already qualified her for southern California championships and places her in the lead. She came up second place in the long jump with a 16' 9.75". Gillas' jump was only a quarter inch behind the winner of that event. She was an All-American Athlete in the state championships last year in the high jump. Gillas finished up her day placing second in the 200 meters with a 27.34 time and that is where she ended up last year.
Samantha Starkey and Jasmine Amaya ran the 100 meters (training only) and competed in the long jump. Samantha jumped 14' 10.75" and Jasmine followed behind her. Starkey finished up her day running the 200-meters in 29.13.
Freshmen Alicia Victoria and Roxanne Cuevas ran the 800 meters. Victoria finished in fifth place overall with a finish of 2:35.40 and Cuevas ran 2:49.93 for her first time in the event. Cuevas also competed in the long jump with a leap of 14' .5". Her javelin throw hit a respectable mark of 67' 11".
Coming off their Cross Country season last semester, the middle distance runners ran the 1500 meters consisting of freshmen, Ashley Lord, Jordan Montgomery, and Kimberly Estrada-Rodriguez. This is a new race for the ladies (high school runs a mile) running three laps finishing with at 300 meters.
For the throwers, sophomore Kim Mataia was third in the hammer 95' 8", fourth in the shot put 32' 8.25", fourth in the discus 97' 0", and third in the javelin 71'0". Alexis Daisy Kotey was fifth in the hammer throwing that for her first time with a toss of 84'10", placing third in the discus with 100'7", fifth in the javelin 66'0", and shot put 30'.25". Angellee Vernon rounded up our crew with a 79'8" hammer, 89'10" discus, 28'11" shot put, and 62'9" in the javelin.
"These ladies will be fun to follow throughout the season as our team has great quality on board and a unity of hard work ethic. That is what I admire about this team so far", said Head Coach Gina Bevec.
