W. WATER POLO: 3RD PLACE FINISH AT STATE

The FC women's water polo team traveled up to Las Positas College in Livermore over the weekend splitting games to take third place overall at the CCCAA State Championship Tournament.

It was the fifth time in the program's history that head coach Gabriel Martinez led the Hornets to the State Tournament that features two of the best from the south vs. two of the best from the north. Fullerton has won the state title two times (2014 and 2019), was the state runner-up two times (2010 and 2018), and placed third once (2021).

In the semi-final game against No. 1 North West Valley on Friday, the No. 2 South Hornets took a hard 14-11 loss against the Vikings. FC's Neida Torres gave Fullerton a lead after the opening sprint, but the Vikings took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter and added to it. The Vikings outscored Fullerton 6-2 for a 9-4 lead by halftime. The Vikings were in control of the game by the end of the third quarter with a 12-6 lead. Fullerton did its best to get back into the game in the fourth by outscoring the West valley 5-2, but it would not be enough. Torres led the Hornets with 4 goals, while Julissa Velazquez and Jordyn Lughart tossed in 2 each.

In the Third Place game against San Joaquin Delta on Saturday, Fullerton took a 3-2 lead by the end of the first quarter on goals by Neida Torres, Adrianna Wong, and Julissa Velazquez. By halftime, FC held a narrow 5-4 lead. The Hornets kept up the pace maintaining a 9-7 edge heading into the fourth quarter, and the defense kicked in holding the Mustangs to 2 scores pulling of a 13-9 victory. Tarsis Ledezma led the Hornets in goals with 4, while Torres and Wong logged in 3 goals apiece.  

After the win over Fullerton, West Valley ended up capturing its first-ever CCCAA State Championship with an exciting 6-5 win over No. 1 South Santa Barbara City College on Saturday.
