FOOTBALL: BY THE SKIN OF THEIR TEETH

The #2 Hornets pulled off a fourth quarter comeback win at home Saturday handing Golden West their first loss on the season 23-17.

Both teams began the day with overall records of 3-0 for the first conference game on the season.

Golden West controlled the pace of the first half scoring on a26 yard field goal by PK Peter Marquez (2:30 1Q) and then a 45-yard TD pass from QB Chris d'Entremont to WR Kyrel Brown  (13:32 2Q).

Up 10-0 in the second half, the Rustlers built on their lead on a 52-yard TD pass from d'Entremont to Robert Cruz to go up 17-0 on Fullerton (11:47 3Q).

The rest of the game belonged to the Hornets as the team bound together and played like a team scoring 23 unanswered points to take the ball game.  QB Jose Escobar hit TE Andrew Main for a 7-yard TD strike to get it started (8:05 3Q).  The two point conversion was good (run by Dustin Stolarski).  Lavorrie Johnson shocked the Rustlers on a beautiful 66-yard run breaking outside for the touchdown (5:52 3Q).  The deciding TD came late in the fourth quarter on a 9 play 55-yard drive that ended on a 7-yard TD run by RB Ryan Byrd (3:40 4Q). The two-point conversion was good on a pass from Escobar to WR Ryan Longoria.

The Hornet defense held strong for the win forcing the Rustlers four and out.  When the FC offense took over inside the GWC 20-yardline, Escobar took a knee letting the clock run down for the Hornet win.

Up Next: Fullerton has a bye next week, but will resume play against #1 Riverside College (3-0) on Saturday, October 12th at Yorba Linda High's Shapell Stadium at 12:30 pm.
