MOUNTIES TOO MUCH FOR THE HORNETS

The Fullerton College football team was out-gunned 34-10 on the road on Saturday night by a physical Mt. San Antonio College squad.

From the opening kickoff, the #5 Mounties ground up the #2 Hornets as everything seemed to go their way.

Start to finish, it was definitely not Fullerton's night as QB Joey Verhaegh was sacked 5 times, the FC running game was held to 33 total yards, and the offense committed 4 turnovers. The second offensive play of the game for FC resulted in a sack and fumble (recovered by Verhaegh), and the last FC play of the game was a fumble.

The score was tied 0-0 through the end of the first quarter as the two teams jabbed at one another. Mt. SAC got on the board first scoring on a 19-yard field goal by Albert Reyes-Villareal with 14:05 in the second quarter. The Mounties went up 10-0 when they punched one into the endzone on a 1-yard run by Justin Alo with 6:21 left in the second. Alo struck again with 3:05 left in the second on another 1-yard run.

Down 17-0 with the first half coming to an end, the Hornets still had some fight as Verhaegh found TE Tim Holt in the back of the endzone for a 8-yard TD with 42 seconds left.

The Hornets went three and out to open the second half and the Mounties took advantage driving the ball 63 yards on nine plays for a 9-yard pass from Antone Anderson to Alo.

FC kicker Casey Eyman knocked in a 41-yard with 4:28 in the third quarter, but the Hornets were still down 24-10.

Mt. SAC's Reyes-Villareal kicked a 33-yard field goal with 3:45 left in the third.

The Mounties defense frustrated Fullerton holding then scoreless for the rest of the game while forcing 3 turnovers. Mt. SAC sealed the victory with 48-yard interception return by Aaron Parham with 7:23 left in the game.

Up Next: The Hornets (1-1 overall) will host a tough Cerritos College team on Saturday, September 20th at Shapell Stadium. Kick off is at 12:30 pm. Bring an umbrella and a lot of water as it will be sunny and hot.
