SOFTBALL: OPENING DAY VICTORY

The Hornet softball squad opened up the 2019 season with a bang out-running visiting El Camino College 7-4.

It was a good win for the Hornets as the 3CFCA preseason rankings have El Camino ranked No. 8 in the state and Fullerton at No. 11.

The Warriors drew first blood scoring in the first inning on a throwing error that allowed Diamond Lewis to score as she stole third.

The Hornets came out hot in the second inning taking a 3-1 lead. FC got it started with 2 runs scored by Sarah Rengifo and Kindy Favata on a Warrior throwing error. They added another run off of Sabrina Anguiano's shot through the left side scoring Desiree Guzman.

El Camino tied the game up 3-3 in the top third when Alena De La Torre hit a single to left field scoring Lewis. Nina Nakawake hit into a fielder's choice giving Marissa Garza the opportunity to cross home plate.

Fullerton would not be out-done scoring 2 runs in the bottom third taking a 5-3 lead. Rengifo ripped a single that bent into left field scoring Lulu Vasquez and Anabel Mendez.

In the bottom fourth, FC added 2 more runs to go up 7-3. Lilavois knocked one to right center scoring Anguiano and Mendez then hit one to right field bringing Lilavois home.

The Warriors did not go away quietly loading the bases in the top of the 7th. With one out, they snatched back a run on a SAC Fly to left field by Nakawake that scored Lewis, but the Hornet defense held strong for the win

Lulu Vasquez (1-0) earned the win going 3 innings with 3 hits against, 2 earned runs, 4 strikeouts, and 2 walks. Jessica Lopez went 4 innings with no hits against, 1 earned run, 7 strikeouts, and 6 walks.

Up Next: The Hornets (1-0 overall) will play another home game on Tuesday, February 12th when they face off against No. 5 Palomar College. The first pitch goes out at 3:00 pm.
