SOFTBALL: VASQUEZ NAMED MVP

The Orange Empire Conference selected Lulu Vasquez as the MVP, while 8 Hornet players earned All-OEC and All-State honors.

Vasquez is no stranger to success as she was the ace pitcher for Cypress College in 2017 when the Chargers won it all going a perfect 48-0. Vasquez was named the conference Pitcher of the Year that season and later earned All-American honors. This season as the conference MVP, Lulu has been stellar on the mound and at the dish. In the circle, she currently has a record of 18-2 and an ERA of 1.50. Vasquez also has 97 strikeouts in 126.1 innings. At the plate, she leads the team in homeruns with 5, has 33 hits (8 doubles), 26 runs, 32 RBI, and is batting .344. Lulu was also a 1st team All-State selection.

Making 1st team All-OEC were Jessica Lopez, Kaylee Williamson, and Veronica Garza. Lopez also made 1st team All-State, while Williamson and Garza earned 1st team All-Southern California honors.

A freshman pitcher, Lopez leads the conference in strikeouts at 188 and has the lowest ERA of 1.01. She is 15-4 overall with 10 shutouts in the regular season.

Sophomore catcher V. Garza leads the Hornets with a .434 batting average (3rd in conference), has 46 hits (9 doubles), 28 runs, and 23 RBI in 106 at bats.

Sophomore center fielder Kaylee Williamson is batting .424 with 53 hits (14 doubles). She is 3rd in conference in runs scored at 39 and has 25 RBI.

Earning 2nd team honors were Anabel Mendez and Khloe Lilavois.

Sophomore right fielder Mendez is the team RBI leader with 38 (2nd in conference) with a batting average of .351. She has 34 hits (8 doubles), 20 runs, and 4 homeruns.

Playing first base is the freshman Lilavois, who is second in the conference with 53 hits (10 doubles). She is batting .432 with 33 runs, 35 RBI, and has 2 homeruns.

Sabrina Anguiano and Sarah Rengifo were honorable mention selections.

A second team All-OEC player last season, Anguiano batted .397 this season with 52 hits (6th in conference), 12 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homeruns, 38 runs, and 23 RBI.

Playing second base, freshman Rengifo is batting .352 with 37 hits, 30 runs, and 17 RBI.

Last but not least, the Hornet Coaching staff led by Head Coaches Speedy Mendoza and Crystal Aguirre was honored as the Orange Empire Conference Coaches of the Year. Mendoza and Aguirre were also honored as the State Coaches of the Year.

Up Next: The No. 5 seeded Hornets (33-6 overall) will host No. 12 College of the Canyons (23-17) this Friday, May 3rd at 2:00 pm for the first round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs. It is a best of three series with game two being played at Fullerton on Saturday, May 4th at noon. If needed, game three will be played on Saturday at 2:00 pm. Come out and support your Hornets!
