BASEBALL: A FINE OPENING DAY

BASEBALL: A FINE OPENING DAY

The Fullerton Hornets traveled to San Diego Mesa to meet the Olympians in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon winning the game 10-4.

It was the season opener for both clubs as FC starter Dylan DeChavez took the mound for the Hornets and threw 3 innings. He gave up 4 runs in his first collegiate start, and then Anthony Parente took over for the Hornets and threw 4 shutout innings in gaining his first win for Fullerton. He only gave up only 1 hit in the 4 innings and, at one point, had a bases loaded until a double play from Row to Huffman to Balbuena to ended the only threat. Sophomore Nick Vega closed out the game with two shutout innings striking out 3 and walking 1.

The Hornet offense collected 14 hits including 5 doubles and a booming triple. Justin Row went 2-5 with 3 runs scored, Laine Huffman had a a great start with 3 hits in 5 AB's and 3 RBI's, Austin O'Banion had a triple driving in two in the first inning to give the Hornets a nice lead and went 2-5 with 2 runs scored and driving home 2, Josh Balbuena went 2-5 with 3 RBI's and a Double, and Bret Halasz was 2-4 with a run scored and a Double.

The win marks FC Head Coach Nick Fuscardo's 600th win. In his 30th season as the Hornet Skipper, Fuscardo's overall record now sits at 600-600.

Up Next: The Hornets (1-0) will next host Palomar College this Thursday, February 4th in the "President's Game", in which Greg Schulz will throw out the first pitch in our home opener. Game action begins at 2:00 pm.
