BASEBALL: HORNETS STIFLE LASERS

The Fullerton College baseball team pulled off a three-game sweep over Irvine Valley College on Saturday beating the Lasers 15-2.

The series sweep of the Lasers helps keep Fullerton (25-8 overall, 13-6 OEC) in the hunt for the Orange Empire Conference title as they trail Saddleback College by a few games. The IVC loss keeps them at the bottom of the OEC standings with an overall record of 13-20 and an OEC record of 4-14.

FC drew first blood (1-0) in the second inning on Shane Carrier's 11th home run of the season that sailed over left center.

In the third, the Hornets took a 2-0 lead on a 6-3 grounder by Laine Huffman that gave Joey Parente the opportunity to score from third base. With the bases loaded, Justin Row drew a walk scoring Andrew Piraino

Fullerton broke it open in the fourth when Josh Balbuena got it started with a double to left center. He was then knocked in by Kevin Foley's rip up the middle. Huffman knocked a shot to right bringing Kevin Foley home. The bases were still loaded when Carrier created more havoc for the Laser hitting a shot to center field scoring Row and Joey Parente. By the end of the fourth, the Hornets were up 7-0.

The Lasers did not go down without a fight as they scored two runs in the sixth. Branden Williams hit one up the middle scoring Clint Jack (unearned). With the bases loaded, Weston Ellis knocked in Jordan Gillerman. FC reliever Chris Sanchez came in and shut down the IVC threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, FC added eight runs more runs to secure the victory.

Starting pitcher Louis Corral earned the win for the Hornets going 5 innings allowing 5 hits, 1 earned run, with 3 K's.

The win now gives the Hornets an overall record of 25-8 and an Orange Empire Conference record of 13-5. The Laser loss lands them at 13-19 overall and 4-14 in the OEC.
