On Saturday, September 2, 2023, the Hornets will host their first-ever home football game on Sherbeck Field. The Sherbeck Football Classic honors the legacy and winning tradition of the Hornet Football program that began in 1916. Head Coach Hal Sherbeck was hired in 1961 and went on to win the 1965 Junior Rose Bowl, and two state championships (1967 and 1983). In all, he led the Hornets to three national titles and 16 conference titles. Sherbeck retired in 1991 as the winningest football coach in community college history with 241 victories and 70 losses (.768 winning percentage). Fittingly, the Hornets will be playing against Santa Barbara City College on September 2nd, which was the last team Sherbeck faced in the 1991 Potato Bowl- a 45-13 Hornet victory.
