A BID FOR THE STATE TOURNEY ON THE LINE

A BID FOR THE STATE TOURNEY ON THE LINE

This Saturday, March 4th the No. 1 seeded Hornets will host No. 8 San Diego City College deciding who moves on to the CCCAA State Tournament.

There is some history between the two storied programs as they met in the state final in 2017. Fullerton fell in that one 53-51 on a last second drive to the basket in Coach Perry Webster's first run at the title as a head coach. Since that game, the Hornets have beaten the Knights three out of four times and added a state title (2019).

San Diego City and Fullerton met up earlier in the season at the 36 Annual Fullerton College Tournament with the Hornets winning that one 97-84. In the tournament, FC won all three games, while the Knights lost a two out of three, including close game against Citrus (79-62).

A formidable team that is very well-coached by Mitch Charlens, San Diego City (14-2) just missed a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title by one game to San Diego Miramar (15-1). The Knight's statistical leaders are All Green (14.2 ppg/4.3 rpg), Kailen Rains (13.6 ppg/3.4 rpg), Kevin Bradley Jr. (13.2 ppg), Anjay Cortez (12.4 ppg/5.3 rpg), Lorenzo Wright (11.9 ppg), and Anthony Howell (10.5 ppg/7.7 rpg).

Rolling hot on a 21-game win streak, Fullerton College features some of the best talent in the state with an offense that is ranked 4th in California scoring an average of 88.1 points a game. The Hornet defense is nothing to scoff at as the team allows on average 68.9 points a game ranking it 7th in the state in net efficiency. FC's statistical leaders are Kobe Newton (14.3 ppg/3.6 rpg/1.9 apg), Shaquil Bender (13.5 ppg/3.1 rpg), Sean Newman Jr. (13 ppg/4.1 rpg/5.7 apg), Jeremiah Davis (12.2 ppg/3.9 rpg), RJ Banks (8.8 ppg/2.8 rpg/3 apg), Javon Jones (8.7 ppg/3.7 rpg), Mike Ofoegbu (6.2 ppg/4.4 rpg), and Sammy Howlin (5.3 ppg/5.4 rpg).

Up Next: The No. 1 Hornets (28-1 overall) will now head into the 3rd Round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs on Saturday, March 4th when they host No. 8 San Diego City College. Tipoff is 7:00 pm. Winner of this game will qualify for the State Tournament at West Hills College Lemoore March 9, 11-12. Come out and support your Hornets for this big game! PACK THE GYM!
