24TH ACADEMIC ATHLETIC AWARDS

It was a busy year filled with many individual accomplishments and team successes as the Fullerton College Athletics Department welcomed student-athletes, parents, faculty, and administration into the Hornets Nest on Thursday afternoon for the 24th Academic Athletic Awards honoring excellence in academics and athletic achievement.

The Hornets won conference titles in football, men's soccer, and men's basketball. Winning an individual state title was Cathilyn Lee for women's golf. She was also the Orange Empire Conference Champion. A team state title was won by the men's basketball team in 2023, who impressed this year with a 32-1 record. It was the second state title under Coach of the Year Perry Webster.

There were many student-athletes from the 2022-23 season that were successful in the classroom and on the field. Athletic Director Scott Giles served as the Emcee, along with the FC handing out the awards to serval deserving athletes for them to continue their education and succeed at the next level.

A Special Recognition award was given to Dr. Nick Arman, who is academic counselor in the Veterans Resource Center at Fullerton College. Dr. Arman is a huge supporter of FC athletics dedicating his time helping and cheering on our student-athletes at many sporting events.

As is years past, there were many Fullerton College student-athletes recognized as Hornet Scholars maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher completing at least 24 units. All of this would not have been possible if not for the tireless efforts of the FC faculty and staff.

The Academic Athletic Awards was the brainchild of beloved former Head Football Coach Gene Murphy who poured his heart and soul into furthering the education of Fullerton College student-athletes. Athletic Director Scott Giles has done an excellent job in keeping the torch lit for Coach Murphy's tradition by creating an atmosphere on campus where students-athletes are rewarded for their efforts and given the proper tools to help further their success not only on the playing field but also in life.
