W. TRACK & FIELD: WHAT A YEAR IT WAS

W. TRACK & FIELD: WHAT A YEAR IT WAS

Despite the pandemic, the FC women's track team did their best this past spring competing and setting personal records at the Orange Empire Conference Finals.

The FC coaches and athletes were excited to get back on the track and show what a year of workouts would turn out to be. Two Hornet women decided to opt in for competition in sophomore Kimberly Estrada and freshman Alyssa Ramos

"They made excellent strides with the short season and few competitions. What they taught themselves is anything is possible and enjoyed putting on their uniform, heart pounding, and standing on the starting line for that competition ahead of them", said head coach Gina Bevec.

Kim Estrada exemplified excellence with her performances making it to the podium, receiving a medal, and walked finished the season with two personal records to finish up her time as a Hornet.  She competed in the 800M running her best race of the season of 2:41.90. While she had no intentions of running the 5K, Estrada decided to give it a chance since there were no fall sports. She set another personal record. The 12.5 lap race presented warm but breezy running conditions that allowed her to shave minutes of her finishing time. Estrada's long runs paid off over the past year to post a 21:48.12 time and a medal for second place.  It was a fantastic way to finish the season and now she will be attending CSULA this coming fall semester.

Alyssa Ramos had a good season competing as a middle-distance runner making great strides in a short amount of time to prepare for the season. She competed in the 800M as well, boasting a 2:34.72 personal record, anbd she improved her time from high school competition. Ramos' 400M time for this year was 1:06.75, and those two races are hard to double in a race.

"Alyssa has improved and there is much more to come with her. She will have many successes next year and it will be great to follow and track her growth. We want all of our athletes to pick up where they left off from their previous season and push the envelope to be at their best", added Coach Bevec.

There was another group of athletes that decided to opt out due to COVID-19. These athletes have been working hard wanting to improve upon their events and get in the extra training. These Hornets exemplified persistence, good work ethic and pride to get the most out of this shortened season.

Next year the Hornets will be coming back to normal with regular season competition, and they will be ready to compete once again.

"There will always be the season we all have lost, but remember what we learned about ourselves during that time. That will be the silver lining of our success to come in the new year.  Strength, pride, and excellence are our athletic characters we will show for the coming season", Coach Bevec.
