TWO MEETS, MAKING IT RIGHT

TWO MEETS, MAKING IT RIGHT

The Lady Hornets open their 2023 season traveling to Bakersfield College for the Battle of the Regions meet. With many months of training leading up to the meet, the sun shined on Fullerton as the ladies turned out great efforts on the track and field.

Freshman Danielle Cervantes and sophomore Alex Turner shad a great 800-meters race.  The current SoCal leader, Cervantes took the lead and created a gap early on from the group and finished the two-lap run in 2:33.58 as teammate Alex (currently ranked third in SoCal) finished behind her in 2:38.70. Freshman Lilyanna Marquez took command in the turn of the 200 meters dash and posted a 26.91 time which has her currently ranked second in the OEC competition.  Freshman teammate Sophia Nagao was seen in another heat of the same race and posted a 28.11 time for a fifth-place ranking in the OEC.  Sophia opened her 100-meters race with a dash to the finish line in 13.55.

The 1600-meter relay from Lilyanna Marquez, Danielle Cervantes, Angelyn Valdovinos, and Alex Turner each completed one lap running the baton around the track for an opening time of 4:29.19.

Sophomore Malila Miranda began her day with the hammer and her two-turn effort finished her in second place with a great effort of 107' 3" (currently ranked second in OEC).  Maui continued throwing the shot put and javelin picking up where she left off from last year's season marks.  Freshman Madyson Rodriguez competed in her first hammer event and has started with her one turn toss of 77' 1". A good start for Madyson and she continued throwing (shot put and javelin) posting respectable marks in those events.

Freshman Ashlynn Ward opened her college career with a 4'0" high jump effort.

The following week the Hornets competed in the Soka Invite.  This was a meet that has some traditional track and field events and was also an indoor qualifying meet. Community college does not have an indoor season however it was a good training day to try the shorter distances and compete against other universities and college teams. Malila Miranda pushed her shot-put mark another foot for a throw of 28'9".  Sophomore Victoria Saldana began her season with a toss of 29'3.25" in the same event.

Freshman Jocelyn Shuler had her college debut in the triple jump and landed in the pit with an effort of 31'3.25". Jocelyn and Ashlynn make up our jumping squad and continue to work on their run to the sandbox.

The shorter odd distances were a great training day for the ladies in the 60M, 600M and mile races.  We are off to a great start of the 2023 season.

Up Next: The Hornets will compete in the Saddleback Invitational on Saturday, March 4th at 10:00 am.
