MLB BASEBALL: HUFFMAN A MET
Laine Huffman, who played two seasons at Fullerton College, was drafted by the New York Mets on Wednesday afternoon after a fine 2017 season playing for the Dirtbags of Long Beach State.
Selected in the 25th round of the MLB draft (757), Huffman just finished a stellar season as the starting short stop with Long Beach State helping his team to a Big West Championship and to the Super Regionals where they lost a close series (2-1) to cross-town rival Cal State Fullerton en route the College World Series. Laine was also selected to the All-Big West team (Honorable Mention). In conference-play, he batted .319 with 2 home runs and 18 RBIs in 23 games. For the season at "Short Stop U.", Laine batted .294 with 26 RBIs and 22 runs scored.
Playing at Fullerton College, Laine was twice named to the Orange Empire All-Conference team in 2015 and 2016. Huffman led the Orange Empire Conference in stolen bases with 16 while hitting .360, 31 RBI, with 45 runs.
A graduate of Valencia High School, where he was an outstanding player, Laine was one of the leading base stealers in Southern California. Huffman was also an All-League performer for Joey Secoda's Valencia High Tigers after getting cut from Servite's team his sophomore year.
