OPENING DAY WIN OVER CERRITOS

The Hornet baseball squad opened the 2024 season with a 4-3 win at Cerritos College on Friday afternoon in game one of the two-game series.

FC got on the board in the first inning after 1B Trevor Schmidt ripped a hard single to left field scoring 3B Kyle Buchanan.

Two runs came in the fifth putting the Hornets up 3-0 when Ryan Kirk knocked a triple to right center field plating Schmidt. Kirk came across on a wild pitch for the third run.

The Falcons cut into Fullerton's lead in the in the bottom of the sixth from Marco Lopez's double that shot down the right field line scoring Dylan Immel and Juan Garcia.

Up 3-2 heading into the ninth, the Hornets got a little breathing room thanks to Trevor Schmidt's solo homerun that sailed over the center field wall. 

Cerritos did not go down without a fight as Juan Garcia worked the count for a walk with the bases loaded. Isaiah Rios came in for the final run of the contest.

Fullerton totaled 7 hits in the game with freshman Trevor Schmidt racking up 3 on the day, including the two-run jack. Others that had hits were Ryan Kirk (triple), Andrew Pyle (double), Kyle Buchanan (single), and Diego Franco.

On the mound, Ari Kligman got the win tossing 4 innings with 4 strikeouts and 2 runs against. Ryan Franson earned his first save as a Hornet. Vincent Segovia got the start throwing 4 shutout innings with 8 K's.

Up Next: The Hornets (1-0 overall) will host Cerritos College this Saturday, January 27th for the final game of the two-game opening series. Game time is at noon.
