The Hornet football team turned up the heat at home against #1 in the state Riverside City College burning the Tigers 52-21.
Fullerton ran the ball very well accumulating 303 yards against a stout RCC defense that had only allowed one other team, in five games, to rush for over 100-yards (Grossmont 120 yds). Leading the ground game for the Hornets was freshman running back Phillip Butler with 218 yards and 2 touchdowns. Before tonight's game he had a total of 18 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown in 4 games. Freshman RB Jake Brito was also effective rushing for 77 yards on 15 carries. He had 3 TDs on the night (1 rushing and 2 receiving).
The potent running game opened up the passing game for Fullerton giving QB Trey Tinsley time to throw the ball. He was very accurate completing 14 out of 20 attempts for 180 yards with 3 TDs and no interceptions. LJ Gainey led all receivers with 3 shifty catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.
PK Tavis Guerra has been solid all season long for the Hornets and he was solid tonight hitting a 20-yard field goal.
The Fullerton defense played tough holding the state's #1 team under 21 points. Riverside's offense before tonight averaged 35 points a game. FC defense caused four turnovers allowing the Hornet offense to convert scoring on all four opportunities. Sophomore DB Marcus Kirkpatrick collected two of those turnovers, a fumble recovery and an interception. Sophomore linebacker Jakob McCarthy led all tacklers with 7 on the night (2 solo/5 assisted).
