Bio

Assistant coach Devin Ugland enters his 3rd season on the Fullerton College staff after spending the past 14 years in sports media as a scout, writer, podcaster and multimedia specialist.

Ugland attended Marina high school in Huntington Beach where he played four years of basketball and graduated from Long Beach State with a degree in Journalism. During his time at Long Beach State, Ugland served as the men’s basketball beat writer and sports editor for the award-winning Daily 49er student newspaper.

Ugland jumped into the newspaper industry out of college, landing a job covering high school and college sports with the Orange County Register. After his time with the Register, Ugland started his high school scouting service, Hoops By Ugland, in 2015. In the six years Devin has been running his service, he has seen hundreds of Division I subscribers and helped hundreds of prospects reach their goals of playing college basketball.

In addition to his written scouting service, Ugland expanded his operation in 2018, launching his Skills Summit event which have drawn 100-plus campers in each of its first two years. Devin has also successfully run large-scale high school team showcase events.

Ugland is known for his sharp eye for basketball talent and specializes in uncovering and showcasing under-the-radar prospects. He has developed a well-respected reputation within the college basketball community with his hard-working mentality, detailed, organized and accurate scouting reports and willingness to spend countless hours in the gym evaluating players.

In his first season as a member of the Hornets’ staff, Ugland’s responsibilities will include on-court instruction, game-planning for opponents and executing the various aspects of recruiting coordination for our Fullerton College Men’s Basketball team.

Ugland currently works in a multimedia role for basketball lifestyle company Ballislife and covers high school sports for the Los Angeles Times. Devin hosts a popular podcast on the Ballislife Network and creates high school, college and NBA content across the platform.

When he’s not in the gym scouting for the next diamond in the rough, Devin spends his time with his wife, Chelsea, and two dogs, Newman and Elaine (yes, from Seinfeld). Any other free time Ugland has is spent on the golf course where double bogeys are often recorded on the scorecard.
