SOFTBALL: HORNET HEARTBREAK

Golden West College upset Fullerton at the Hornet Nest in an Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday afternoon 8-7.

Fullerton started off strong doing some damage in the second inning when 1B Eryka Springer blasted a solo homer over the left field ivy.

In the third inning, Springer struck again ripping a hard shot that got through the left side scoring Sabrina Anguiano. Tiffiny Centeno came up knocking one to center field for a single that scored Springer. The Hornets were up 3-0.

Up 3-0, the Hornets fell apart in the sixth inning giving up 8 runs and the game as Golden West got it started on an Isabella Ramirez hit to right field for a triple, scoring Alyssa Aragon. Jenna Terrones laid down a bunt for a base hit scoring I. Ramirez. With the bases loaded and only one out, the Rustlers made a bold move stealing home and scoring Jenna Eberhardt for the tying run. Golden West College went up 4-3 on a blooper by Courtney Reed to right field scoring Jenna Terrones. Rheanna Davis singled down the infield line allowing Maddy Schicker to score 5-3. The Rustlers offense was not do yet. With Rheanna Davis on second base and Janelle Watson in third base, Isabella Ramirez singled up the middle to bring both of her teammates home 8-3. 

The Hornets tried to answer back in the bottom of sixth inning with Veronica Garza single to third base bringing in Alexis Contreras 8-4.

The Hornets last opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Elexa Rangel and Sabriba Angulano were able to score off of Eryka Springer tripled down the right field line. With two outs, Alexis Contreras came up and hit a single bringing in Springer, but Kassandra Salazar's stretch from second to home was not in time as her potential game-tying run was tagged for the third and final out of the game. 

Up Next: The Hornets (3-4 overall) will hit the road this Friday, February 23rd when the play Santa Ana College. Game time is at 2:00 pm.
