SOFTBALL: MOVING TO ROUND TWO

The No. 5 Hornets are moving on to round two of the Southern California Regional Playoffs as they ended No. 12 College of the Canyons season winning two straight games at home Friday and Saturday.

Friday's game was a close one as Fullerton fell behind early in the first inning 2-0. Micayla Aguilar hit a single to center field that scored Rena Edwards, and Alondra Torres was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring Kayla Yamane.

Fullerton got a run back in the bottom of the first when Khloe Lilavois hammered a double in the left center gap allowing Kaylee Williamson the opportunity to come home.

In the fourth, the Hornets tied it up on Sarah Rengifo heads-up play scoring on a throwing error by the Cougar's catcher.

Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Fullerton's Sabrina Anguiano finished off the Cougars cranking her fourth homer of the season deep in the left field corner for a two-run shot that also scored Natalie Gonzalez.

Pitcher Lulu Vasquez got the start for the Hornets going 5 strong innings with 4 hits against, 2 runs, with 2 strikeout, and 2 walks. Jessica Lopez tossed 2 innings grabbing the win on 1 hit, no runs, 1 strikeout, and 1 walk.

In the second game on Saturday afternoon, Fullerton did not dilly-dally scoring 4 runs in the first inning before eventually enforcing the mercy rule with an 8-0 five-inning-win.

Lulu Vasquez hit a single to right field that brought Veronica Garza in. Lilavois followed up with a two-run-single plating Vazquez and Kaylee Williamson. Anabel Mendez popped a shot to left field giving Lilavois that chance to score.

Mendez doubled to center scoring Hunter Williams in the third putting FC up 5-0.

In the fourth, Khole Lilavois hit a hard shot down the left line scoring Garza and Sabrina Anguiano. Mendez worked the count for a walk with bases loaded forcing Vasquez home for the eighth and final run.

Getting the nod in the circle was Jessica Lopez who earned her 17th win of the season throwing 5 innings of 2-hit softball with 0 runs, 0 walks, and 6 strikeouts on the day.

Up Next: The No. 5 Hornets will advance to the second round of the SoCal Regionals May 10-11 when they play at No. 4 El Camino College (2:00 pm on Friday and 12:00 pm on Saturday).
