WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: COD WINTER CLASSIC

After dropping the first game in overtime at the College of the Desert Winter Classic, the Hornets caught on fire winning their next two games to claim the Consolation Championship.

Fullerton opened up the tourney on Thursday with a hard-fought 66-64-overtime loss to LA Trade Tech. The game featured 7 ties and 6 lead changes. Fullerton's largest lead was 14 points with a few seconds left until the half, but the Beavers came back strong edging out the Hornets. Depsite the loss, Tianna Buford had a big game leading FC in scoring with 17 points. She also had 13 rebounds for a double-double. Monica Hanna scored 12 points with 6 rebounds and Nancy De La Cruz had 11 points with 2 boards.

In the second game on Friday, the Hornets beat LA Southwest 50-42. In the first minutes of the game, the Cougars had a 4-2 lead, but FC quickly erased that. With just over two minutes left in the first half, Fullerton took their largest lead of 19 keeping LA Southwest at bay until the end. Nancy De La Cruz scored 11 points, had 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Tristian Johns put up 9 points with 6 rebounds and Tianna Buford scored 8 points with 11 rebounds.

The Consolation Championship was played on Saturday with the Hornets beating Victor Valley by a healthy margin of 86-47. FC took the game over from the opening tipoff and kept a strangle-hold on the lead. The Hornets largest lead was 39 points (largest this season) with just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter. Monica Hanna led the charge with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. She also had 3 blocked shots. Nancy De La Cruz and Tristian Johns both came up big with 15 points each. Johns also brought down 10 boards and De La Cruz had 6 respectively. Tianna Buford dropped in 8 points and had 3 rebounds.

Fullerton forward Monica Hanna was named to the All-Tournament Team for her excellent play.

Up Next: The Hornets (7-6 overall) will host the Colleen Riley Holiday Tournament that will run December 27-29 in the Hornets Nest. Fullerton will open with LA Pierce College on Tuesday, December 27th at 1:00 pm.
