WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: DOWNING THE DONS

The Hornets rebounded well from their stunning last second loss last Wednesday holding off Santa Ana College on the road 68-61 Friday night.

The win gives FC a 13-7 overall record with a 5-1 in the Orange Empire Conference (2nd place). The Santa Ana defeat bumps them down to 8-12 overall and to 2-4 in the OEC.

Fullerton fell behind early as Santa Ana took a 7-4 lead in the first few minutes of the game on a lay-in by Lexi Ross. FC tied the game up at 10 a piece by 3:42, but the Dons took off on a 9-1 run that ended the first quarter at 19-11.

The second quarter was better for the Hornets as they snagged the lead back 29-26 on free throws by Celise Moreno and Angela Zendejas with just under 4 minutes left in the half. Both teams slugged it out for the remainder of the half to a 33-33 tie. 

The FC offense awoke in the third quarter going on an incredible 16-0 run (49-33) that was capped off by a jumper by Shenise West.

Loaded with a strong 58-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Hornets let up on the gas in the final minute of the game giving away fouls, and Santa Ana took advantage making a series of free throws and a deep three-pointer that cut the lead down 66-61. Fouled with 2 seconds left in the game, Moriah Serrano locked up the win for Fullerton.

Serrano had a game-high 18 points for the Hornets. Jessica Quirarte followed with 11 points, while Shenise West and Angela Zendejas chipped in 8 points each. West also had 5 blocked shots with 19 rebounds. Hannah Jones scored 7 points with 10 rebounds.  

Up Next: Fullerton (13-7 overall, 5-1 conference) will take on first place Irvine Valley College (17-2 overall, 5-0 conference) at home on Wednesday, January 29th. Tip off is at 5:00 pm. Come on out and support your Hornets or this big game!
