FOOTBALL BOWL GAME: HORNETS & PANTHERS TO DO BATTLE

The #5 Hornets (6-4) will host #10 Chaffey College (6-4) in the Western State Bowl game on November 21st.

The Panthers and Hornets will face off for 38th time, however they have not played each other since 1967. Fullerton and Chaffey last met not too far away at La Palma Park in Anaheim, California. The outcome was a 46-13 win for the Hornets who went on to an undefeated season winning the national title.

The first time these two storied programs met was back in 1921. The leather helmets clashed on an all-dirt field, and when the dust settled the game ended in a bloodied 0-0 tie.

The overall series between Chaffey and Fullerton has stood still at 19-17-2 for forty-eight years with Fullerton holding a narrow lead.

Chaffey comes in to today's game having given a few of the 2015 season's toughest teams a run for their money. The Panthers opened up with a 46-16 win over Orange Coast (a team that defeated Fullerton), beat Moorpark by a large margin 48-25, fell to Mt. San Antonio by only three points 34-31, and gave Long Beach City fits before losing 52-40. The Panthers are led by running back Quincy Ross who finished with a conference-high 11 rushing touchdowns in the tough Central Conference. Ross accumulated 943 total yards during the regular season and will be a force to reckon with. Levi J. Plant serves as the Chaffey quarterback and he can throw the ball around. In ten games this season, Plant has thrown for 1,984 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The Panthers are a dangerous team that averages 36.2 points per game.

The last time the Hornets played in the Western State Bowl was in 2012 with Fullerton hosting Citrus College in a 31-24 victory over the Owls.

Freshman QB Trey Tinsley will lead Fullerton with his arm, in which he has thrown for 1,984 yards (same as Chaffey's Plant), 13 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. On the ground, FC has a three-headed monster in Anthony Wood, Phillip Butler, and Pop Thomas. Any one of these running backs can break loose for a big gain.

The Hornet defense will be anchored by linebackers, Thomas Cletcher (70 tackles), Jakob McCarthy (55 tackles), and Lukas McCarthy (44 tackles). D'Angelo Ross (39 tackles/17 breakups), Tim Roberts (41 tackles), and Marcus Kirkpatrick (26 tackles/2 ints.) will lead the anti-air attack for FC.

If the Hornets play their brand of football, the sky is the limit for this young team for this bowl game and in 2016.

Up Next: The Western State Bowl game will be played at Yorba Linda High's Nathan Shapell Stadium on November 21st. Kickoff will be at 1:00 pm.
