MEN'S BASKETBALL: A CHAMPION PASSES

Last week, Rodrick Johnson, the starting power forward on the 2006 undefeated 37-0 state championship team died in a car crash in Mexico.

Rodrick had been playing professional basketball in Mexico for the past few years.

Johnson played basketball for the Hornets in 2005-06 under Dieter Horton and in 2006-07 under Bob Schermerhorn. Rodrick's freshman year at Fullerton saw him average 10 points and 5 rebounds per contest that helped the team in its undefeated run. His sophomore season, he was selected 1st Team All-Orange Empire Conference and averaged 19.3 points, along with 8.9 rebounds per contest.

After his days at Fullerton, Johnson went on to play at Chaminade University.

Johnson was a consensus National Top 150 player out of Canyon Springs high school where he averaged over 20 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 blocks per contest under Coach Stovall.

"In my 20 years of coaching, no one played harder than Rod. He was one of my favorite players in my career and I loved him dearly.  There is not a year that goes by that I do not use him as an example of how the game should be played.  Off the floor, he was full of life and an absolute joy to be around. He was a big reason why history was made in 2006. The Hornet Basketball Family has lost a great one", former Hornet Head Coach and current Cal State Los Angeles Head Coach Dieter Horton.

Rodrick was born on May 15th, 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is survived by his father, mother, and two brothers.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7th at 11:00am at the Eastside Church 3330 East Mira Loma Avenue, Anaheim, California 92806, 714-871-6844.
