The No. 2 Hornets have been playing lights-out basketball the past few games, and they kept it going at home Wednesday night beating Santa Monica College 68-54.
Fullerton (11-1) came into the game ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 1 in Southern California. FC had beaten their last three opponents by an average of 28 points, and they did not pull any punches when taking on No. 15 in SoCal Santa Monica (7-5).
It was a testy first half for the Hornets as the Corsairs came out to play. In the first minutes of the game, SMC flew around the court taking 5-point lead (9-4) over Fullerton on a jumper by Teddy Parham. FC quickly got out of their hole tying the game up 9-9 when Lance Coleman II knocked down a three-pointer at 14:39. The tone was set for the rest of the first half as both teams matched each other shot for shot. When the smoke cleared, both teams headed to their locker rooms with Santa Monica holding a slim 32-31 lead.
The second half was a completely different story as Fullerton turned on the jets going on a 20-8 run (51-39) by 11:23. The Corsairs did not have an answer for Hornet center Ronne Readus as he controlled all action in the paint as the Hornets ran away with the victory.
Readus put the team on his back scoring a season and game high 27 points with 10 rebounds for his 8th double-double. Readus shot an unstoppable 12-15 in the paint. He also had 3 assists. Coleman II scored 15 points for Fullerton and had 5 rebounds with 6 assists. Rodrick McCobb dropped in 8 points and Vaj Rice scored 6.
Up Next: Fullerton (11-1 overall) will play again this Saturday when they travel down to Grossmont College for another non-conference matchup. Tip off is at 5:00 pm.
