HOLDING OFF VAQS

Fullerton welcomed Santa Barbara City College into the Hornets Nest Wednesday night and held off the Vaqueros 3-2.

The win lifts FC to 7-5 in the overall standings, while the SBCC loss lands the team at 3-6.

Set one was a battle setting the tone for the rest of the match. As both teams exchanged points serve-by-serve, the Vaqueros pushed ahead with a 16-14 lead. Fullerton flipped it taking an 18-20 advantage thanks to a kill by Andrew Delgado-Tietze before winning it 25-23. The second set belonged to Santa Barbara 25-15. The first half of the set was a competitive 13-10, until the Vaqs went on a 12-5 tear to finish it out. Set three was another battle that went down to the wire with SBCC winning it 28-26. Fullerton pulled the match momentum its way in set four taking it 17-25. The fifth and deciding set proved to be a close one with FC pulling it out 14-16 that was capped off by Leonardo Mazuco's solo block.

Hunter Wong-Hin led the Hornets with 15 kills and 12 digs. Leonardo Mazuco brought down 10 kills and 7 blocks on the night. Connor Stoebe chipped in with 6 kills and 6 digs, while Andrew Delgado-Tietze had 5 kills and 6 blocks. Aaron Delgado-Tietze came up big with 38 assists and 2 blocks. David Perez was all over the floor with a team-high 17 digs.

Up Next: The Hornets will begin a 4-game road trip on Friday, March 11th when they travel to Golden West College opening Orange Empire Conference-play. Match time is at 6:00 pm.
