W. TRACK & FIELD: RECORD BREAKER

A ten year school record was broken in the 10000 meters at the Occidental College Invitational last Friday night.

Sophomores, Daisy Esparza and Maegan Garritson stood at the line with many other 10K runners not knowing what to expect as this was there first 10K run for the season. Little did they know they were about to run personal bests and break a school record. The previous record was held by Luz Valdez running 38:09.43 in 2004 and Daisy Esparza broke it Friday night under the lights at Occidental College with a 37:45.44 valiant effort.

Maegan Garritson had a personal best, as well, and ran 39:48.11. Both are currently ranked second and fifth place respectively in state and Southern California competition.

On Saturday, the Lady Hornets competed against other community college, university and open athletes at the Ben Brown Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton.

Vanessa Franco ran for second in her heat for the 400M Hurdles in 1:10.35. Her second best race of the season. She is still ranked in second place for the OEC. Tia Streeter stood on the line for her 800M run and finished third in her heat and a personal best in 2:23.38.

Taylor Morico and Dani Rubio ran the 1500M that afternoon. Taylor Morico won her heat in 5:12.11 (another PR-personal best). "The race started out fast then slowed down and I knew I had to pick it back up and run my race. It felt good", said Taylor.

Dani Rubio was in the same race as her and finished with a time of 5:35.59. "I felt good through 800M", commented Dani.

"It was a good start to the opening of the season competition", Coach Bevec.
