WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: A HORNET IS CROWNED AT THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!
FC's own Jasmine Williams maintained her first day lead in the heptathlon to win the state title handily with 4,620 points over the weekend. Breanna Curry of Cerritos scored 4,375 points for the silver medal. Jasmine broke her own school record and three (100M Hurdles, Shot Put, and 200M) of the seven events were personal records. This score currently ranks her fifth in the nation and gave the Hornets their first All-American athlete in the state championships.
The second FC athlete to earn All-American honors was Fanny Giron. Fanny walked in to the meet as the Southern California Champion in the 400 meter event. She ended her season on a high with running her fastest 400 meter of the season and took third overall. Deajah Stevens led wire to wire in the 400 meters, taking a convincing victory in CSM stadium record 53.88, ahead of Doshawn Franks (55.88) of West Los Angeles followed by Fanny Giron (56.15) of Fullerton.
Andrea Mendez competed in the 1500 meter event, which is an event she currently holds the school record for. The race was fast and very close from the beginning. With 400 meters to go in the race. the runners heard the bell lap and put in their last big sprint. Andrea was building momentum as she made the last turn heading for the finish line. She crossed the line in 11th place for her final time of 4:47.13. That was a half a second off her best time of the season. These ladies scored 16 points for the team and finished in 19th place out of 40 California community college teams.
The state championships were hosted by the College of San Mateo May 15-16.
