WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: CAL STATE L.A. INVITE

The Hornets had a two-day competition at Cal State Los Angeles last Friday and Saturday, which gave the Hornets a chance to compete with other community colleges, universities, and open/unattached athletes.

Some of the open athletes present in this meet were using this competition as another chance to get ready for the trials coming up for this year's Olympics.

On Friday, Cydney Chavers had a six-foot improvement in the hammer and won her flight with that toss and finished 9th overall. Amber Hernandez was 11th overall with her throw of 106'9" and Madison Fitzpatrick was 13th for her 79'1" effort.

Chavers finished 9th overall in the discus with an average throw of 103'2".

"We had two weeks of hard training, and I did not expect big throws at this meet", said Head Coach Gina Bevec.

On the track, Belen Gonzalez ran a few seconds off her best in the 1500M with a finish of 5:16.56. She also gave herself a 30- second improvement in the 3000M (7.5 laps on the track).

"I felt good in the 3000M race and it was a change running late in the evening", Gonzalez remarked.

Samantha Duong and Jasmine Mendoza both competed in the 400M hurdles. Duong had finished 6th overall with a time of 1:08.90. Mendoza had a similar race running 1:13.72 for a 9th place.

"Our practices are hard in this part of the season and running through these meets and it gives our athletes good exposure with the next level athletes", claimed Bevec.
