WOMEN' TRACK & FIELD: HORNETS WEATHER THE STORM

The Lady Hornets traveled to Occidental College to compete in the Occidental Distance Carnival over the weekend.

The meet was bigger than last year and the ladies were able to compete amongst different community colleges, universities, open, and unattached athletes.

The day started out with cloudy skies and threatened to rain on the Hornets. They were able to get in half of events, until the storm came in putting the events on hold until Saturday.

Samantha Duong competed in her first 100M Hurdle race of the season finishing at 16.31 for a personal record (PR). She managed to beat her time from last year. Duong's effort gave her 10th place overall.

Jasmine Mendoza followed in the same tracks as Samantha running 17.45 very close to her best time from last year in the same hurdle race. They both continued the day running in the 400M with finishes of in 1:03.22 (Duong) and 1:04.55 (Mendoza).

"Sprinters do not enjoy running in cold weather and their efforts are to be appreciated", Claimed head coach Gina Bevec.

On the field side, the hammer event started off the competition for the ladies with Cydney Chavers throwing near her best at 108' 9" for 11th place.

Amber Hernandez did not have her best throw, however she tossed 105' 2". Teammate Madison Fitzpatrick gave herself a PR throw of 98' 9".

The rain was starting and did not bother the javelin throwers. Duong gave herself a personal record (PR) and a third place finish with a 89'2" throw.

Madison Fitzpatrick came in fourth and had a PR throw of 79' 10" in the same event.

Amber Hernandez threw 66'2 and Cydney Chavers tossed a 63' 2" effort.

The rain came down putting an end to the day, and the throwers came back the next day for the remaining shot put and discus events.

Cydney Chavers started her day of events with a seventh place finish in the discus of 102' 11".

"I have been working on my form and now it just needs to click and put it all together", replied Chavers.

The shot put event was next for the ladies and Fitzpatrick took third with 34' 5". Chavers was fifth with a throw of 32' 1.5" and Hernandez gave herself a season best with a throw of 28' .25".

It turned out to be a good meet after all, considering the weather conditions were a major factor. The ladies proved that they can compete in any conditions.

Up Next: The Hornets will compete in the Antelope Valley College Invitational on Friday, March 18th @11:00 am.
