WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: SOCAL PRELIMS

The Hornets took a trip to Antelope Valley College on Saturday for the Southern California Regional Championships.

This meet was a prelim round to qualify to the SoCal Regional finals next Saturday, May 14th. All horizontal events had 27 competitors and each received three efforts. The field would then be cut down to the top 12 competitors to advance to the finals the following week.

In the Hammer Throw, Cydney Chavers took to the ring for her three efforts. She finished 23rd overall with a 111' 0" effort.

The next event for the ladies was the Javelin. Madison Fitzpatrick clinched the 12th place on her last throw and gave herself a PR (personal record) of 98' 7" and Samantha Duong threw 89' 9", which finished her in 16th place.

Chavers and Fitzpatrick moved to the discus ring for their next event with Cydney throwing 100' 0" for 19th place and Madison 93' 4" for 23rd place.

In the Shot Put, Cydney and Madison competed well with Cydney finishing 20th with a 32' 9.75" effort and Madison locking down another PR with a throw of 37' 1.25" advancing her to the finals in 10th place.

On the track, there were three heats with a total of 27 athletes competing for the top nine spots for the finals. All heat winners automatically advanced and the next fasted times to fill the nine lane track would qualify to the finals. In the 100 M Hurdle event, Samantha Duong ran 16.30 for a PR and qualified to the finals. Jasmine Mendoza ran a click off her best time of 18.34 and finished in 20th place. Duong gave herself another PR and qualified for the finals with a 1:04.04 time. She is currently ranked 2nd in Southern California and 3rd overall in the state. Jasmine finished in 10th and ran 1:10.06 and will be an alternate for next weeks race.

"All in all, the ladies competed at their best and I am proud of them and their efforts", said Head Coach Gina Bevec.

Up Next: The Southern California Regional Track and Field Championships at Antelope Valley College on Saturday, May 14th. Field events start at 9:00 am and the track events will begin at 12:30 pm.
