WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: GREAT DAY FOR HORNETS
It was a great day for the Hornets last Friday as they achieved 12 personal records that set up an 81-40 win over Golden West College in an Orange Empire Conference dual meet.
The ladies were on top of their events and nothing was going to stop them as they competed under great weather conditions in Huntington Beach.
"It was encouraging to see the support each other had for their teammates. We picked up a win and pushed our marks forward. That was the key for this meet", said head coach Gina Bevec.
There were season best times that helped win both relays in the 400-meter (Liz Pean, Jordyn Reese, Shyleen Ramos, and Daniela Juarez) and 1600-meter (Shyleen Ramos, Jordyn Reese, Daniela Juarez, Cassidy Nyenhuis). Winning the 400-meter set the tone for the day as great things soon followed.
Jordyn Reese placed second in the 100 and 200-meter dash while posting personal records in these events 12.79 and 26.62 respectively. Liz Pean took third in the 100 meter behind Jordyn with a 13.71 effort. Shyleen Ramos had a great day, as she was busy with the relays while taking second place in the 400-meter dash with a 1:07.00 time.
Ramos competed for first time in the high jump and finished in third place. Her great fortune came in the long jump setting a PR of 14' 2" to take second place.
Daniela Juarez won the long jump with her best effort of the season at 14'8".
Cassidy Nyenhuis had a double-win in the 800 (2:38.55) and 1500 (5:21.86) meter events adding to the Hornet's successful meet against the Rustlers.
The Hornets swept the competition in the shot put, discus and hammer. Kailani Talag won the shot put (34' 4.75") and javelin with an improved mark of 97'6".
Yessenia Gutierrez improved her shot put to 30' 8.5". Marianne Gourd captured the hammer and discus events with PR performances. Gourd tossed the discus hitting a mark of 106' 8". Her hammer throw was an improvement by two feet at 120' 6".
"Our training is good right now. A win like this sets up the week of training to have a different tone and looking forward to this weekends meet", said Coach Bevec.
