WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD: EL CAMINO INVITE

The Lady Hornets came up shining in the rain with 15 best efforts at the El Camino Invitational on Saturday.

The day started out with a downpour as the ladies took to their long jump event.  Myrna Gillas finished in third place jumping 15' 5". Fellow teammates Shyleen Ramos and Josephine posted personal best with 13' 11.5" and 13' 7.75" efforts.  The 400 meter relay team of Jade Crutchfield, Jordyn Reese, Madison Reese, and Myrna Gillas came in second with their best time of 51.43 as El Camino claimed first with a 51.04 time. The theme for the day continued as the Hornets scooped up PR (personal record) after PR.  

Jordyn Reese decided to be the best 100-meter runner in the invitational for CC as she dashed past the line in 13.33.  Jade Crutchfield was 4th with a 13.72 PR. Josephine Riese followed behind her with a 15.11 time.  Shyleen Ramos gave herself a two second improvement in the 400M running a 1:09.34 for fifth place. Belen Banda Gonzalez said she was ready to improve her time in the 800M and did with a 2:40.23 run. She gave herself a good effort in the 1500M only seconds off her best time as she tenaciously ran a 5:33.97 time. Maricruz Vargas decided to run the 3000 meters (12:17) to tune up for next week's race in the 5K.

Back to the field events, more improvements by the throwing squad. Marianne Gourd was the champion in the shot put and threw her best throw of the season 36' 8.25". Freshman, Kimberly Mataia gave herself a huge PR and second place with a 34' 6.25" toss. These ladies are now currently third and fourth in the conference standings. Sophomore, Yessenia Gutierrez had a big throw as well was she decided to switch to the glide technique and it has looked good on her with a 31' .5" mark. Kim Torres improved her marks for her season as she tossed the shot put 21' 7.5" and the discus 61' 2". Marianne Gourd came in second place in the discus with her best throw of the season 108' 9".  Marianne followed the same suit in the hammer for second place with a 121' 11" effort. Kim Mataia finished in 5th place in the same event and another big throw of 98' 8" for her day's competition. 

Up Next: Occidental College Classic @ Occidental College Saturday, March 10th. The Field events will begin at 9:00 am with Track events starting at 11:30 am.
