WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: THE SOCAL PRELIMS

The Southern California Regional Prelims were contested at San Diego Mesa College this past Saturday.

This meet was a qualifying round for all events with the exception of the horizontal throws as finals only.

Qualifying for next week in the finals will be the 400-meter relay from Shyleen Ramos, Jordyn Reese, Madison Reese, and Myrna Gillas.

Gillas jumped a PR in the long jump of 16' 9.75" and will return for the finals and also qualified in the high jump.

Yessenia Gutierrez will compete in the discus event.

Sophomore, Marianne Gourd had personal bests in her two events with the shot put and hammer and finished out her year competing at her best. Her hammer flew 142' 6" and finished up ninth. In the shot put, she needed the "A" standard mark for state qualifying and she threw that effort in the prelim round with a toss of 38' 7.5". The throws were kicking up in the finals round, and she just missed qualifying for the state championships needing another quarter inch.

"All in all, Marianne had an awesome year and I am proud of her efforts, and lead Hornet throwers with a championships style" said Coach Bevec.

Freshman, Kim Mataia had a hard time getting the hammer going as she fouled out in her first event of the day.  She rallied back and threw one foot off of her best in the shot put for fourteenth place.  Look out for her next year as you will see her performance in the throws bigger and farther.

"Kim has never thrown before and she has developed in to a thrower that has untapped talent.  Making it in to the SO CA prelims is huge for a thrower like her", replied Coach Bevec.

Freshman, Josie Riese jumped one foot from her PR in the long jump and ended her season of competition.

"I had a great experience this year and look forward to coming back"' said Riese.

Sophomore, Jordyn Reese wrapped up her 100-meter race with a time of 12.85, while her sister Madison Reese was a snap behind her with a time of 12.94. These ladies performed at their best in their individual events and you will see them run in the short relay.  Next week all events will compete for qualifying to state championships in Bakersfield.
