WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: CAL STATE L.A. INVITE

The Lady Hornets competed under gloomy and raining skies all day on Friday at the Cal State LA Invitational, however that did not stop them from throwing out their best performances of the season.

Raquel Aldama and Angellee Vernon were meet champions in this invitational. Angellee Vernon had a 33-foot personal record (PR) in the javelin and won it with a 95'8" throw. She is ranked second in the Orange Empire Conference with that effort.

"It felt easy and everything clicked when I released the javelin", said Vernon.

Raquel Aldama won her 3000 meter race with a great 100 meter closing finish. Aldama's time was 11:24.56, and she had a very strong finish catching Janet Meza-Avila of Cal State LA (11:24.94) at the finish line.

"I felt good getting in a race like that", replied Aldama.

Rebeca Perez opened up her season in the 800 meters with a respectable time of 2:36.15 and 5:26.81 with the 1500 meters under steady rainfall.

The 400 meter relay from Jasmine Amaya, Myrna Gillas, Alicia Victoria, and Sam Starkey ran 51.59 and is currently ranked second in the OEC. This was there first time working the stick around the track with a successful finish.

Myrna Gillas, prior to this race, had a PR in the long jump keeping strong leading the OEC by two feet in that event. Myrna won her heat and was the best community college runner in the 200 meters with a PR of 26.49.

Sam Starkey won her heat, as well with a PR in the same event (28.16).

Roxanne Cuevas is gearing up for her first heptathlon this week and ran 28.93 for the 200 Meter.

Alicia Victoria battled her way around the track in the 400 M LH running 1:11.88.

"Today was a character building day. This was a good day for us with taking adverse conditions and making it the best situation", said Bevec. 

Kim Mataia improved in the hammer thowing 115'5". She nearly threw her best in the shot put with 35' .25".

Alexis Kotey had an improvement in the shot put as well with a toss of 31' 9.25".

Angelle Vernon finished up her day throwing (another PR) with the SP of 30' 1.5".
